Recover an unsaved or earlier version of a document

Lost work is recoverable more often than people expect. Office autosaves drafts, and files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint keep a full version history.

  1. Look for AutoRecover

Reopen the app (Word, Excel…). If it crashed, a Document Recovery pane often appears on the left — pick the most recent version.

  2. Use File → Info → Manage Document

Choose 'Recover Unsaved Documents' (or Workbooks) to see drafts Office kept of files you never saved.

  3. Restore a previous version from OneDrive

If the file is in OneDrive or SharePoint, right-click it online and choose Version history to open or restore an earlier version.

  4. Check the Recycle Bin

If the file was deleted rather than overwritten, check the Windows Recycle Bin and the OneDrive online Recycle Bin.
