How to fix no sound in Windows 11

Losing sound on your PC is frustrating, but it is usually caused by something simple like a muted setting or the wrong speaker being selected. As you have already tried restarting, work through the steps below in order, checking for sound after each one. Most people find the problem within the first few steps.

  1. Check the volume and mute settings

Look at the speaker icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen, next to the clock. Click it and make sure the volume slider is turned up and the speaker icon does not have a cross through it. If your keyboard has volume or mute keys, press the volume up key a few times too.

  2. Check the volume in the app you are using

Some programs, such as web browsers, video players and Teams, have their own volume control. Make sure the sound is not muted or turned down inside the app. In a web browser, also right-click the tab and check it is not set to mute.

  3. Check your speakers or headset

Make sure your speakers or headset are plugged in firmly, switched on and have their own volume turned up. If you use a monitor with built-in speakers, check the monitor's volume too. Try unplugging the cable and plugging it back in, or try a different USB port or audio socket if you have one.

  4. Choose the correct sound output

Click the speaker icon next to the clock, then click the small arrow next to the volume slider. A list of sound devices will appear. Select the speakers or headset you want to use, then try playing a sound again. Windows sometimes switches to a different device, such as a monitor or a disconnected headset.

  5. Check Bluetooth headphones or speakers

If you use wireless headphones or speakers, make sure they are charged and switched on. Open Settings, select Bluetooth & devices, and check the device shows as Connected. If not, select it and choose Connect. If Bluetooth headphones are connected that you are not wearing, the sound may be going to them instead, so disconnect them.

  6. Check the sound settings

Right-click the speaker icon next to the clock and select Sound settings. Under Output, make sure the correct device is selected and the volume is turned up. Scroll down to Volume mixer and check that no apps are turned down to zero.

  7. Run the audio troubleshooter

Open Settings, select System, then Troubleshoot, then Other troubleshooters. Find Audio and select Run. Follow the on-screen instructions and let Windows try to fix the problem automatically.

  8. Check for Windows updates

Open Settings and select Windows Update. Select Check for updates and install anything that is available, including any optional driver updates. Restart your PC when asked, then test the sound again.
